About the Book


This book mainly depicts the historical development, musical composition of Jiangnan Silk and Bamboo Music and its special styles, and social customs in Southern China.


In the first chapter, the author presents us silk and bamboo music, Southern China culture, another name of Jiangnan, silk and bamboo musicians and the origin of silk and bamboo music. The second chapter explores more details of multi-sources of silk and bamboo music, silk and bamboo music and other kinds of music and musical instruments. About the Author


Qi Kun is a professor of ethnomusicology in the Musicology Department of the China Conservatory of Music. She earned her B.A in Pipa Performance from Anhui University in 1990, M.A degree in Ethnomusicology from the Musical Institute of the Chinese National Academy of Arts in 2001, and Ph.D. degree in Ethnomusicology from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2005. She is also program committee member of International Musicological Society East Asian Regional Association (IMSEA), a researcher in the Research Institute of Ritual Music in China, and a member of the ICTM and the China Traditional Music Association.


Her fields of interest focus on Chinese folk music in historical, ritual, and social contexts. She has recently published her books Interpretation in History: The Study of Silk and Bamboo Music in Nanhui of Shanghai (2007); Jiangnan Sizhu (2009 [1st ed.]; 2012 [2nd ed.]); Expression of Ritual Soundscapes in Ritual Space (2011); Rural Ceremony and Folk Music: The Study of Ritual Music in Huizhou of Anhui Province (2013); etc, as well as 29 articles in many widely circulated professional publications.


About the Translator


Yao Qian is a teacher at Zhejiang Normal University. Her research is about Translation Studies and English Teaching. She holds a master’s degree from Zhejiang Normal University in the area of English Language and Literature with the thesis titled “A Case Study of Humor Translation--from the Perspectives of the Verbal Humor and the Gestalt Theories.”
