About the Book

Sichuan opera is not the oldest Chinese traditional opera, as it has only a history of three hundred years, but there would be no exaggeration to say that it is the most unique of all, with its comprehensive tolerance of various tunes from other kinds of operatic forms and the particular skills and techniques of its own. It has also borrowed a large number of classic traditional operas to fill its opera types, and added to them the unique Sichuan flavor, like singing in Sichuan dialect, accompanied by the Sichuan gong and drum, or playing exclusive stunts. In 2006, it has been included in the first National Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Thus, it is of great necessity to make it known throughout the whole world, making it the legacy of all peoples.

This book first goes through the history of Sichuan opera briefly, and then puts emphasis on its unique characteristics, including the formation of its repertoire, the performing arts, the combination of various tunes absorbed from other Chinese traditional operas, the stage art, the different troupes, the famous players and playwrights of different periods of time. At the same time, pictures are also inserted to make the description vivid. By reading this book, one can surely establish a general and clear idea about Sichuan opera in China.
