The stone windows of Sanmen are an important part of the precious historical and cultural heritages of the coastal county of Zhejiang province in China. Local craftsmen began to make stone windows as early as the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279) and the unique folk craft flourished in the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. As time went on, the craft grew and matured, absorbing traditional and cultural elements and achieving a perfect integration of artistry and practicability. The stone windows are actually windows on the dynamic history and culture of Sanmen Bay, on the local people’s excellent stone carving techniques, and on their inspiration, imagination and creativity. The windows show how local people pursue the beauty and excellence in life.
The book focuses on exploring artistic roots of stone windows of Sanmen and discusses the various stone windows in terms of their features and functionality: stone windows with geometric, copper-coin, single vine, flower and plant, character, human figure, eight-treasure, and animal images patterns.
