The Book of Changes, or Yi Jing (known in the West as I Ching), is China's oldest philosophical text extant. Its origins are lost in the mists of time, but scholars believe the first compilation was done early in the Zhou Dynasty. Based on a divination system using eight basic trigrams (groups of solid and broken lines), permutations of 64 pairs of trigrams were worked out. Over the ages pithy commentaries were added.
The Book of Changes charts the movements and developments (hence, 'changes') of all the universe's phenomena. Many regard it as a complete system of philosophy in itself. Emperors, statesmen and generals throughout Chinese history consulted it.
Revered by Confucius, the Book of Changes was included in the five classics of Confucianism. It was one of the few books spared when Emperor Qin Shi Huang (259-210 B.C.) ordered the burning of previous dynasties' works. The Illustrated Book of Changes is a venerable classic made available to readers of modern Chinese and English. The 64 hexagrams and their traditional commentaries are explained with illustrations, and the Chinese text has been written by leading calligraphers.

The love between Li Longji and Yang Yuhuan is more than the simple love between an emperor and his imperial concubine. It comes close to a concept of love that ordinary citizens gleaned from novels written in the Song and Yuan dynasties.
The story comments indirectly on the period’s social and political lives and touches on issues such as the misery caused by the wealthy and their excesses. In this respect it breaks the mold of stories based entirely on brilliant men and beautiful women and adds a deeper meaning to the story. With b&w illustrations.

The central hero is Lord Bao, who rises from humble beginnings to high office at the imperial court, gathering around him a group of Robin Hood-type men to fight crime and corruption. The seven heroes of the imperial court form a musketeer-like relationship—all for one and one for all— with the five gallants, and roam around rescuing maidens in distress, succoring the old and weak, using their exceptional fighting talents to kill evildoers.

Author Liu E is a brilliant intellectual born into a scholarly family at the end of the Qing Dynasty. By describing what Lao Can sees and hears on his travels, the author fiercely attacked the injustices he witnessed and exposed the so-called “honest and upright officials" as hypocrites who tried to rise to power at the expense of the people.
Written in 1905, The Travels of Lao Can has been circulating for nearly a century and people think highly of Liu E's mastery of language. The use of language, observations and detailed descriptions all show the author's originality. Among late Qing-dynasty novels, The Travels of Lao Can is, artistically, a prominent work.
