About the Book

Folk Legends of Gengcun in China, as a part of folk intangible heritage of humanity, is ranked as one of the wonders in the Han culture. It is renowned for its variety of oral storytelling and its rich contents. The legends in this book cover not only great figures and events in history, but also new life stories of people after the foundation of new China, which have been handed down orally and polished gradually. Thus, Gengcun is recognized as the China folk culture village.

Unfortunately, folk legends are now lack of preservation and development. Therefore, Chinese government has organized different academic groups to record, sort and preserve for the sake of rescuing and protecting folk culture. Since folk legends of Gengcun village were officially listed in the category of the national intangible cultural heritage in 2006, the local governments have taken a series of measures to protect and extend the tradition of storytelling.
