With 221 color plates and 221 b/w illustrations, this volume is a survey of ancient Chinese bronze bells from the Song dynasty to the Qing. These are not bells excavated from tombs, but those found in temples and palaces. They are delicately cast with clouds, animal or Buddhist motifs and most often times with inscriptions.

一、 古钟卷分为古钟、编钟与铃、外埠藏品三个部分。各部分均以年代顺序排列，共选录西周、汉、唐、宋、元、明、清、民国时期的精品130余件。

二、 所选精品均为北京地区各博物馆、文管所、著名古刹及文物保护单位内的文物藏品；并酌情收有保存在京的、具有浓厚地域特色的外地古钟精品。

三、 本卷收有《北京古钟文化纵谈》一文作为概述，图版有要关内容的简要文字介绍。

四、 考虑到铃与钟的发展关系，本卷还收入了部分编钟与铜铃，以便读者对古钟文化能有一个比较全面的了解。

五、 关于钟、铃的年代问题，绝大部分的古钟都有年号记载；一些早期的铜铃及没有年款的古钟经由大钟寺古钟博物馆聘请的专家确定了一个大致的年代，供研究参考。
