About the Book

Huzhou Writing Brush in China explores the evolutionary history of the country’s writing brush and its close ties with the development of China’s painting and calligraphy arts. It introduces the types and varieties, particularly its specific producing techniques which make the brush what it is today as the king of writing brushes in China thanks to its famous “four virtues” of sharpness, smoothness, roundness and sturdiness. It also reviews those time-honored writing brush stores in China. Most interestingly, the collection of some funny stories and legends of Huzhou writing brush adds some bright color to the book.

In 2006, “The Craftsmanship of Huzhou Writing Brush” was listed as the first group of national intangible heritages in China, which is, for one thing, the recognition of the whole society to the value of Huzhou writing brush; for another, a reminder for the people at present to inherit and protect this important cultural relic.
