It’s adapted from the namesake novel by Lao She.This film depicts Fang Baoqing’s deeply-inflicted family, drum singers by trade. During the WWII, Baosen, Baoqing’s brother was bombed to death by Japanese invaders. Xiulian, his younger daughter failed to marry Meng Liang, a progressive writer, and then got raped by a lovelace, Zhang Wen; Dafeng, his eldest daughter was deserted by her husband.
