Since the early 20th century, Zhejiang province in China has been an important region for watercolor painting and its research. In the history of modern art, many preeminent watercolor painters were inextricably linked with Zhejiang province. Since 1989, with the support of Zhejiang Artists Association, Zhejiang Watercolor Artists Association has held seven consecutive terms of National Watercolor Painting Exhibitions in Hangzhou, capital of the province, and Zhejiang has been the hub for Chinese watercolor painting. A great number of watercolor painters at home and abroad actively participated in the exhibitions, which became stimulation to the creative passion of Zhejiang watercolor painters.

The ten watercolor painters included in this book have all been engaging actively in watercolor painting in recent years, and are very successful and outstanding representatives of the young and the middle-aged painters. They have absorbed the quintessence from the works of the older generation of excellent watercolor painters and have been persistent in the watercolor painting and research. Ultimately, creative communities of watercolor painting with different styles and regional characters came into being. With diversified styles and various opinions, these artists strive to the unification of painting techniques and artistic pursuits. This book will help us gain a general knowledge of the current development situation of watercolor art in Zhejiang, and provide a reference for the future development of it.

Luo Xianyue, born in 1960 in Lin’an, graduated from the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts in 1986 and from the watercolor senior seminar of the China Academy of Art in 1999, is a member of the China Artists Association, a member of the Watercolor Painting Committee of the China Artists Association, vice chairman and secretary-general of the Zhejiang Artists Association and vice chairman of the Zhejiang Watercolor Artists Association.
