Pan Honghai was born in Shanghai in 1942, graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts in 1967. He once worked in the Zhejiang Painting Academy as the vice-president and president successively, and is currently its honorary president. He is also one of the national class one artists and a member of the China Artists Association.

Pan’s oil painting unites the meticulous and realistic style of the classicists and the use of rich colors by the Impressionists, aiming at reproducing lifelike figures and the beauty of light and colors. In his painting, he lays stress on spatial comparison and the point that painting techniques and colors should all work for the motif of the painting. He believes a painter should not only express himself in his paintings, but also take into account the experiences and needs of the viewers. Besides, Pan is also adept in portraying classical Chinese beauties and country landscapes characterized by rich national culture and spiritual essence. In his paintings he gives a vivid and detailed picture of the fairness, amiability and gentleness of Chinese women. His paintings are not only his emotional release, but fine artworks with social attributes, universal values and academic values.

This is Vol. 3 of the Artists of Zhejiang, China series.
